Madarao & Tangram

The interconnected resorts of Madarao and Tangram are steadily growing in popularity thanks to their excellent snow quality, outstanding tree powder skiing, accessible side country terrain, and consistently well-groomed slopes. Located in Nagano Prefecture, these resorts are also conveniently close to larger and more established destinations such as Myoko, Nozawa Onsen, and Arai, making Madarao an appealing option for a agreat snow adventure or as part of a broader multi-resort ski holiday.

Madarao is a smaller and more traditional ski resort compared with some of Japan’s major alpine destinations, and this character is reflected in both the village atmosphere and its accommodation. While there are a few larger, slope side hotels that offer comfortable stays, much of the remaining accommodation consists of older-style Japanese pension lodges and smaller properties. Many of these are well maintained and welcoming, but they are generally more dated in design and facilities, offering a simpler, more classic level of comfort rather than modern resort luxury. Guests should arrive with an understanding that Madarao prioritizes snow quality, terrain, and local charm over contemporary accommodation standards.

The village itself has a modest but lively selection of restaurants and Western-style bars, creating a friendly and authentic après-ski scene. At neighboring Tangram Resort, the Tokyu Resort Hotel Tangram provides the main ski-in/ski-out accommodation option, offering a higher level of resort style accommodations, a full-service resort hotel experience complete with a swimming pool and relaxing indoor and outdoor onsen baths.

Together, Madarao and Tangram offer a combined total of approximately 30 ski courses served by 15 lifts, with terrain suitable for beginners through to advanced skiers and snowboarders. Limited night skiing is also available for those keen to squeeze in a few extra turns after dark.

Beyond skiing, the area is known for its welcoming small-town atmosphere and variety of winter activities. Guests can enjoy snowmobiling, guided backcountry and snowshoe tours, snow rafting, and dedicated children’s snow play areas. Should you wish to explore further afield, nearby towns are easily accessible by bus, providing additional dining and sightseeing options. As with any good Japanese ski resort, a selection of local onsen offers the perfect way to unwind after a day on the slopes.

Madarao and Tangram are ideal for travelers seeking deep snow, excellent tree skiing, and a relaxed, down-to-earth resort atmosphere, with the understanding that accommodation and village infrastructure are more traditional and understated in style.
