This hotel is popular and you'll need to book early - but there's a reason for it! The hotel is old and rooted in tradition, but no expense has been spared in keeping the facilities up to date, the rooms clean and the décor current. Each room features beautiful artwork and lovely furniture that will make you feel as though you're at home, while the hotel staff are incredibly helpful and friendly and make sure you have everything you need.

There are also a large variety of rooms, ranging from spacious family rooms to compact twin - each with ensuite bathrooms and entertainment. There are also western-style rooms available if you're not a big fan of sleeping on futons. The family-run hotel also offers some of the best communal facilities you could ask for.

The hotel lobby is fused with a beautiful Japanese garden and as soon as you enter you'll begin to appreciate the delicate details and attention paid to creating the atmosphere of the hotel. You won't stop there, though. The hotel's onsen is famous, and being a naturally heated, naturally mineralised and unfiltered source of relaxation, it's not hard to see why. It's exclusive for hotel patrons, though, and with a total of 28 rooms it definitely doesn't get crowded.

The cuisine offered is traditional Japanese, so you might need to travel if you're after a western dish, but we do recommend visiting the hotel's restaurant at least once. It's also made itself a name in the area and you'll need to book in advance to try some of the delicious and delicate dishes offered. A western breakfast is offered, though, so you won't have to miss out on your coffee and toast.

And, of course, the hotel features all of the expected inclusions - laundry facilities, ski rental services, ski drying rooms and a gift store. This means not only will you feel incredibly at home, but you'll only have to leave if you want to explore the area a little or get amongst the snow. And, located only a short walk from the ski base, you'll definitely be doing a little bit of that!

Onsen & Spa

In-house Onsen "Taka no yu"

Famed for its stunning appearance, beautiful tranquillity and calm atmosphere, the indoor and outdoor onsens at Ryokan Sakaya are arguably the highlight of many people’s stay. They’re exclusive for hotel guests and they’re quite large with a few different options, meaning it’s never too crowded and you’ll always find a spot to relax in. The water is naturally heated, unfiltered and unaltered, and contains the famed sulfur minerals of Japanese onsens, which have been said to help heal, soothe and calm.
For anyone looking for a lovely private or romantic experience, you can book an hour in the 4-person private onsen in advance. Just as stunning, this is definitely a must-visit if you like your peace and quiet. Both indoor and outdoor onsens are situated in beautifully traditional landscapes and buildings, extending on the already immersive authentic Japanese cultural experience of the hotel. The indoor building is designed and constructed following the traditional Japanese carpentry technique of Miyadaiku, and relaxing amongst a building like this isn’t a chance you’ll get often. They’re all available all day long, so you can take a dip any time you’d like, and split into women’s and men’s sections for privacy.
