Beautifully blending Japanese tradition with western modernity, Kawamotoya offers the best of both worlds to all guests. The entire building has been recently refurbished, and this is evident from the moment you enter the building. The lobby is intimate, cosy and atmospheric, featuring modern designs and gorgeous architecture. Yet, the traditional Japanese culture has been retained and is evident through the use of natural materials and vibrant prints.

The hotel also has its own fine dining restaurant, offering a variety of western and Japanese dishes which is, again, set in a stunning modern space with an intimate atmosphere. The only space of the hotel that doesn't carry this air is the shared bathtub with hot water, which doesn't need it - the heated water will have you cosy and relaxed in no time even though it is not the mineralised onsen hotspring water.

The rooms themselves are all traditionally styled and floored with tatami mats, featuring traditional dining spaces and some nice décor. However, the recent refurbishments mean that the room is also open, bright and airy and has a variety of western comforts guests will love, such as modern ensuite bathrooms, LCD televisions and tea/coffee making facilities.

The hotel is located around 15 minutes from the ski slopes, making it a bit of a walk, but transport can easily be arranged to the slopes or into town for some variety in your food or shopping. Of course, there is a spattering of other hotels and ryokans surrounding you, meaning you've also got options for different onsens to try out!

The hotel features ski rental serves as well as ski drying and storage spaces for the ski enthusiasts, making it perfect for enthusiasts. Those who might not want to spend their entire holiday skiing however, will also enjoy their time - the hotel houses a physio who offers not only traditional physiotherapy but basic massages as well and the view from the hotel's rooftop is incredible and a sight not to be missed.
