Akakura Kanko Hotel

It's tempting on first sight to believe this hotel is newly constructed - its impeccable facilities and modern design definitely point in that direction. However, you'll be surprised to know that this hotel was originally established in 1937 and has since been an iconic figure in the Japanese ski travel industry. It has, of course, undergone significant renovations and refurbishments and the facilities have been continually upgraded, but this hotel still holds onto much of its heritage through its classic European design.
Located literally on the slopes, guests couldn't be closer to the action. The definition of a ski-in-ski-out resort, the hotel is ideal not only for anyone who enjoys a little luxury, but also for anyone who doesn't want to waste any time getting to and from the ski runs. It is, though, a little far out from the centre of town, but the impeccable service means it's a breeze to get to and from everything that's there.
However, you might not need to at all. The hotel offers a tremendous range of facilities, including a complete gym and fitness centre, tennis and golf courses and an array of indoor and outdoor onsens for guest use. There's also three superb restaurants within the hotel, and an additional café and bar. This means there's a huge variety of food available to suit all needs. Keep in mind that it's not exactly cheap, but the quality is well worth the price.
Each of the rooms follows the mixture of traditional and modern design, many of them featuring classic design elements mixed with modern features and facilities. Each room is fitted with a luxurious ensuite bathroom, LCD televisions and Wi-Fi access, and some also include fireplaces and, for those looking for a truly opulent getaway, private open-air balcony onsens.
If you don't get a private onsen, though, don't stress - the hotel has a huge range of onsens available for private and public use. These are arguably some of the best in Japan too, many of them overlooking the incredible views of the valley and the mountainous landscape that surrounds it - there aren't many better places to thaw yourself out after a ski than that. To go with it, the hotel operates a full service spa run in partnership with French cosmetic brand Clarins, meaning a professional spa, facial or body scrub are all at your fingertips.
The hotel also offers laundry facilities to guests looking for an extended stay, as well as large conference and event halls that can be used with reservation. To top it off, the hotel also has its own stunning chapel used for weddings in the venue, a library for some tranquil quiet time and is serviced by some of the most dedicated and enthusiastic staff you'll experience during your stay in Japan.

Onsen & Spa

In-house Onsen
This hotel features a range of public and private onsens, each of which has its own great views, beautiful atmosphere and benefits. The onsens are separated into men’s and women’s baths, but the private onsens can be used by couples or families provided you have a prior reservation. Not only are the onsens naturally heated and mineralized, but the open-air onsens are also arguably some of the most incredible in the area, if not Japan, and are privy to the incredible views across the landscape that are characteristic of Akakura Kogen. Many of the indoor onsens do also, looking out through stunning large picture windows.
Each onsen is also fitted with a dressing room that doubles as a lounge area. Extreme care has been put into these spaces, each one fitted with private booths with gorgeous European décor and design. Most of the onsens are open from early morning through to late evening, making them the ideal spot to both start off a relaxing day or unwind after a day on the slopes.

Earth Spa
The in-house full spa service offered at Akakura Kanko provides a perfect way to unwind. There are a range of beauty and therapeutic treatments available, but the most common are obviously massages that pair perfectly with a dip in the onsen. The spa isn’t free for use, but it’s relatively cheap for the high quality of service and professional treatment you’ll receive.
The spa is open from afternoon through to evening, and reservations are required in advance for treatments. There are both male and female spa technicians available, and romantic experiences like couples massages are also an option if you’re looking for a unique way to relax with your partner. If you couldn’t tell from the name, the spa is operated in partnership is Clarins, a French cosmetic brand that provides high quality products for both personal and therapeutic use.
